Hot, cold, whatever!

Nothing to see here besides a 60 degree gap that we are trying to grow bermuda grass in! Another 38 degree night last night doesn't help things but the bermuda is pushing through. The cold, dry weather this winter and early spring has the bermuda behind but it will prevail soon enough.

The Sabot back nine fairways are thankfully getting their summer transition started. It is easy to see how the poa is getting burned out of 10 fairway after the higher temps last weekend. The vamont underneath is waking up. We'll be mowing these fairways lower to help continue stressing the cool season and encourage the bermuda to take the reins back.

We made a final push to patch up some sodding projects around both courses this week. Besides replacing some small areas around the new sprinkler heads on the front nine we have continued to evaluate, clean up and reduce the size of some of our pine straw beds. This bed on 10 Sabot where the bald cypress used to be was raised up so water can flow better to the drains.

Having grass here we keep this area dryer and more playable.

The large bed left of 14 Manakin was also partially sodded over Thursday. While we do have to mow the turf during the season, it is still easier to manage than a wind blow pine straw bed that needs constant weed control and replacement of the straw twice a year.

The path edge on 8 green Manakin got cleaned up with some fresh sod and pavers.

This Monday we are set for even more work on the Sabot. The fairways, approaches and tees will be solid tine aerated to set us up for some spring root growth. A wall to wall composting will go down and then a fairway, tee and approach sand topdressing will follow that. Everything will be brushed in nicely and ready for play on Wednesday. The compost will serve, hopefully, as our season long fertilizer while also helping firm up the soil in conjunction with the sand. The sand will also help us smooth out some of the last bumps from the irrigation project. Our cultural practice schedule is posted here on the Blog front page if you are looking for the next upcoming improvement to your course!
