Member Guest Week!
Member-Guest Week!
The golf courses are dialed in! The weather has really cooperated with us
this week for once. A couple of inches of rain the week before, and some
possible rain the week after—the stars are finally aligning. Conditions are
firm, and greens are rolling anywhere from 12'8" to 13'3" this week.
The heat, dry conditions, and properly timed wetting agent and growth regulator
applications have both Sabot and Manakin greens playing at a top level.
Our tendency is to find things wrong with the golf courses, complain about
them, freak out about them, obsess about them, and then execute a plan to
improve those conditions. That's the round robin that goes on every week at the
maintenance facility. Every once in a while, it's important to appreciate the
view.
These couple of weeks are always a whirlwind, but when you step back, it's easy to appreciate the results of all the hard work. Ben Longest, along with his assistants Tae Kim and Will Holcombe, are responsible for the spectacular conditions on the Sabot. Grant Lowery and his assistants, Wil Lannon and Sloan Williams, watch over the Manakin course, maintaining world-class conditions. These professionals help create and organize outstanding conditions on a daily basis. It’s also important to make sure the boys are having fun! Whether it’s racing to the bay after a morning of member guest setup for a day of fishing with your dad, or flying a drone in the shop…we’re having fun.
We have roughly 40 total all-stars who pull off these conditions every day,
and they all work together to provide this experience for our members and
guests. During a week like this, our singular goal is to allow our members to
show off their club to their guests. It always helps when the weather aligns
and conditions mirror tour-quality golf.
Weekly reminders...
Broken tees, Zyns, and cigarette butts—pick them up, take them with you, and
leave them in the cart. Leave them anywhere but on green grass.
We will be venting greens on Monday and finishing on Tuesday with a light topdress. The greens have earned a spa day after the last 2 weeks of repeated double cuts, rolling and enduring a beatdown to achieve the firm fast conditions we are currently seeing. Moving along into summer - the bermuda will be happy to see that first muggy day!!
