Fall Fertilizer, Fairway Application, and Flowers

Our winter annual plant order has finally arrived, and Rosa and Angela couldn't be happier! We rounded up the team to help unload the flowers from the truck and get them into the ground. Most of the plants are already in the soil, marking the final major planting of herbaceous material around the property for the year. Early next week, you can look forward to seeing our fall decorations making their way back out.

The tractor sprayers got dusted off this week and came out of the shed for our second application targeting spring dead spot.

We use the smaller 200-gallon sprayer for the tees and approaches on both courses. Its more nimble build allows us to access tighter areas with ease. You’ll likely see the sprayers back out in a couple of weeks for what will probably be our final nutrient application on the bermuda-grass this season.

The fungicides used to control spring dead spot need to be watered in after application. Since we already needed to run irrigation for this treatment, we decided it was a good opportunity to apply our fall potassium as well, allowing it to benefit from the same watering cycle.

Across the 100 acres of shortgrass at Hermitage, we applied 8,000 pounds of product evenly over our playing surfaces—about 2 pounds per thousand square feet. Achieving that level of precision wouldn’t be possible without careful calibration and the broadcast spreaders we rely on for fertilizer applications.

We followed up with about a quarter inch of irrigation, and that wrapped up both our fall fertilizer and spring dead spot applications.

The upcoming weather looks perfect for what remains the best golf month of the year. As in years past, a few of our team members are volunteering at the Dominion Energy Charity Classic over at The Country Club of Virginia. We wish the CCV team all the best for a successful tournament week. Have a great weekend!
