What a mess!
The last two weeks have now been quite wet on the golf course. We accumulated a little over 3.5" of rain this week from left over bands of rain from Helene. In the last 90 days we have only had two other days where we received over an inch of rain at a time, let alone 3. Of course we are no one where near what people in the true path of Helene are dealing with, 20" of rain and hurricane force winds. We should consider ourselves lucky that we are still out here playing golf and have a house to go home to.
Mushrooms have been popping up in peoples lawns and on the golf course also. The wet, cloudy weather is a perfect breeding ground for fungus. Again, be thankful we are managing mostly bermudagrass. Cool season courses are ringing up the fungicide budget this year for sure.
The golf course was looking fresh and beautiful after the mowers were forced to stay in the shed for 5 days. Since our dry and cool spell in early September the warm nights have come back along with some moisture keeping the bermuda moving.
Today was the first day we could get the mowers back out on the fairways and tees. The big mowers had their height raised from .500" to .550" in order to reduce any scalping. It is still not a great cut today and we will be back after again tomorrow.
The tractors have not made their way on to the course yet so we have been pushmowing smaller wet areas including the entire clubhouse lawn yesterday. The sun is finally back out and we hope to get back to normal a bit over the weekend!
Some bad luck on our pre-emerge spray last week where a hose blew off the pump on 3 tee Manakin. Concentrated pre-emerge here may prevent new sod from rooting in so we are testing a small section before we repair the entire area.
Only one real fun project from our wet list this week to show you. This back path to the dump area has always been a disaster, especially after a rain. We hauled about 6 dump trucks from the hot mix plant to hand pave the slope. This will be a massive improvement for hauling heavy loads up the hill, especially in the winter time.
The weather looks great moving forward, enjoy the sun as we get back to the fall weather!
